2015 FINAL
Yorkshire Academy
The Yorkshire Academy team celebrate with the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy

The talented young cricketers of the Yorkshire Academy have won the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy for the first time.

They chased down a Methley total of 220-9 to win by six wickets with four balls to spare in the final at Elsecar,

It capped an impressive first season in the competition which has seen them defeat Hoylandswaine, Treeton and Methley all away from home.

Their latest success owed much to a man-of-the-match winning performance from their opening batsman Mosun Hussain. He made an unbeaten 85 which enabled the Academy to secure their second cup win in successive weekends following their Yorkshire League Cup final win over York seven days earlier.

Hussain refused to be flustered as Methley, who had retained their Central Yorkshire League title 24 hours earlier, pushed them all the way. He provided stability with an innings containing two sixes and seven fours.

After Ryan Gibson gave the innings early impetus, Hussain and opener Elliot Callis shared a crucial second-wicket stand of 112. The watchful Callis made 55 from 100 balls and hit five fours.

Methley made the Academy batsmen work for their runs with off spinner Eddie Walmsley bowling his ten overs for just 17 runs.

Callis contributed a patient 55 before becoming a victim of Mohammed Bashir (3-47) who was the most-successful Methley bowler.

Methley, who chose to bat first after winning the toss, were given a bright start by skipper Richard Foster (49) and Marcus Walmsley (30). They put on 84 in 17.4 overs, but their team-mates were unable to capitalise on it. Luke Bullingham (34) was the only batsman in the middle order to threaten the dominance of the bowlers.

Tight seven-over spells from Jordan Thompson 0-17 and Gibson (1-19) supported the wicket-taking exploits of James Logan (3-32) and Waite (3-51) as Methley lost momentum and slipped to 159-6. Three more wickets fell for one run as Methley were reduced to 197-9 before Chavez Younes (34no) helped them to 220-9.

Nobody will have been more satisfied with the young Academy side’s win than their captain Matthew Waite who learned his cricket with Methley. He certainly used his bowling resources well as the Academy proved themselves to be worthy winners of a well-contested final
