Yorkshire Academy made a record-breaking debut in the Black Sheep Champions Trophy in a memorable match away to the 2013 winners Hoylandswaine.

The Yorkshire League chanpions powered their way to the competition's highest-ever score of 463-6 and with Hoylandswaine making 300 in reply, the match aggregate of 763 was also a record.

The Academy, who were still smarting from a heavy defeat by Barnsley in the Yorkshire League 24 hours earlier, came out with all guns blazing after winning the toss against the Drakes Huddersfield League champions.

Openers Ryan Gibson and Elliot Callis set the tone with a first-wicket partnership of 131 in 14,5 overs. Callis' contribution to the early onslaught was 32.

Gibson continued to pound the Hoylandswaine attack as he raced to 102 with five sixes and 12 fours, from just 60 balls.

Mosun Hussain wasn't prepared to let the tempo drop as he made 127 from 90 deliveries, an innings laced with five sixes and 14 fours.

Hussain was joined in a fourth-wicket stand of 125 by Matthew Waite (56) and when the latter departed, Jordan Thompson came in to bring the innings to a stunning crescendo. He smashed 11 sixes and four fours as he made 98 not out from just 43 balls.

The bowling figures for Hoylandswaine didn't make good reading, but at least the team's spirit was not broken by being knocked around the park at more than nine runs an over.

It was to Hoylandwaine's immense credit that they didn't surrender tamely and their batsmen certainly went down with all guns blazing, despite losing Alex Morris to the second ball of the innings from paceman Matthew Fisher who had featured for Yorkshire Vikings in Friday's NatWest T20 Blast defeat by Lancashire Lightning.

Opener Gharib Nawaz set the tone with 86 from 76 balls and he received support from Sarjinder Singh in a second-wicket alliance of 129.

Once they were parted, Hoylandswaine slipped to 163-7 as James Logan took 3-65, before veteran wicketkeeper Alan Mynett and Max Joice produced more fireworks.

Joice struck four sixes and six fours in his knock of 68 while Mynett, who is renowned for never considering anything to be a lost cause, hit five sixes and seven fours in making 73.

Making 300 is no mean achievement, and though Hoylandswaine still lost by the considerable margin of 163 runs, they had played their part in a game the spectators who watched it will remember for years to come,
