After winning the title three times in four years, it might well be more difficult this year for Pudsey St Lawrence with three vital players departed, reports Reg Nelson. However, they are never afraid to promote their young rookies from within, and this has held them in good stead for many a year.
They have not been idle in the close season, and visitors will be able to enjoy a top-notch refurbishment of their clubhouse.
They are also keen to see their recently relaid square settle down. “Hopefully we will start to reap the benefits of the square after it was completely renewed at the end of the 2017 season, said secretary Richard Brown.
"It did receive mixed reviews, and more extensive work has been carried out in the close season and the general feeling is that it will take three years to witness the full potential.”
On the field the team will have a different look. Brown added: "We lost three valuable players in the close season, Adam Waite (New Farnley), Charlie Parker (Hall Park) and Tom Hudson (North Leeds), and all three were instrumental in the success the club has enjoyed over the past few seasons. We wish those players all the best.
“One player to come in is Adam Frost from Undercliffe who has shown great potential in the pre-season nets. Hopefully, our junior production line has produced the talent required for the future as it has done for many years.”.
“A fourth title in five years is obviously the aim for captain, Chris Marsden, who is enjoying his second year in charge. However, with other top teams opening the purse strings it`s going to be a challenging year.”
The club has worked hard to continue to enhance its facilities. Brown said: "Following the final day of last season, it was all hands on deck as we commenced our refurbishment of the premises. New seating, new carpets and a fully decorated clubhouse were delivered on time due to the dedication and hard work of members”.
“Our annual beer festival takes place on the weekend 19th- 21st April, a fine selection of 10 cask ales the order of the day. In between we have a friendly between ourselves and Pudsey Congs on the 20th followed by live music in the evening. This promises to be a great weekend, and a warm welcome awaits all”.
