In the first of this year’s Club in Winter feature, Reg Nelson looks at Gildersome & Farnley Hill and discusses their future prospects with committee man Liam Pearson.
Although the newly-formed club only improved their league position by two places in 2018, they inherited some solid performers from the old Dales Council team, namely Richard Bedford, Gethin Clarke and Michael O’Halloran who all contributed well.
During the season Richard Bedford (447 runs) and Gethin Clarke (400 runs) were the main batters, while Liam Pearson contributed well in both formats with 362 runs and 32 wickets.
Last season’s First Team skipper Liam Pearson is pleased with how the club is going-
“Following the successful merger of our two clubs in 2018, our new committee at Gildersome & Farnley Hill CC have been extremely busy throughout the winter, putting together a plan to take the club forward for years to come”.
“This includes pushing hard on fund raising and also making sure we have our house in order. We need to ensure we have the playing strength to compete in our respective decisions. We have had
fantastic support from all the players, led by our newly-appointed captains Richard Bedford, above, and John Crowther, both vastly experienced players, as well as other volunteers. They have been out and about approaching local businesses in order to try and gain valuable sponsorship and to date we are delighted with the results”.
“We have also been working hard planning social events and have our showpiece event coming up on Friday 8th March. This is an evening with former GB Rugby League legend Garry Schofield OBE and top northern comedian Bill Woolland. We still have a few tickets remaining if anybody fancies a night out at Gildersome & Farnley Hill CC”.
“From a ground perspective we have managed to raise sufficient funds to finance running new armoured cabling around the ground. This will ensure that we have power to the scorebox to get our electronic scoreboard fully working for the season ahead. Additionally we will have our sponsors run completed so we can promote local businesses who have kindly offered their support for the season ahead”.
“On the playing side we have already secured three new signings in Adam Campion (Adwalton), Reece Thompson (New Farnley) and Gavin Dyson (Denby Dale) who will strengthen our sides for 2019, and we look forward to them becoming a key part of our new set up. We have a few other irons in the fire that we hope to confirm in the coming months”.
Pearson ends by acknowledging the progress in the club: “We are delighted with the way our two clubs have pulled together over the past 12 months, and as we speak, the future looks good. This is a far cry from recent years where at times we have been literally living hand to mouth – we are looking forward to an exciting 2019 season where we hope to further consolidate our club both on and off the field”.
