Clubs pay tribute to John White

Former Undercliffe president and secretary Rodney Broadbent has paid tribute to the club stalwart John White who died last week.

Broadbent, a winner of the coveted Sir Leonard Hutton Trophy for his outstanding service to the Bradford League, has praised White’s outstanding contribution to the Intake Road Club and his genial personality.

Writing on his club’s website he said: “John was a life member of UCC after joining in 1968. He was first team captain and later second team captain.

“John came to us as a fast bowler, later in his career changing to slow bowling and could also bat a bit.

“John later played for the second team and under his guidance were very successful. He was respected by all who played against him.

“John was a great servant of the club, organising quizzes on Tuesday evenings and party nights, especially on New Year’s Eve.

“Whatever he did he put his heart and soul into it. One of Undercliffe’s greats, he will be sorely missed.”

Pudsey St Lawrence, the club where White first emerged onto the Bradford League scene have also paid their tribute.

“John had a lifetime connection to PSL having joined the club as a junior before progressing through to become the club’s professional.

“John also played for other Bradford League and Airedale & Wharfedale clubs and was probably best known for his involvement at Undercliffe Cricket Club.

“John however was still a regular visitor to Tofts Road due to his family ties to Debbie, Zara and Kristen and his many friendships with Saints members as well as players, past and present.

“Our thoughts and prayers go to wife Diane, daughters Debbie, Vicky and Mandy and granddaughters Zara and Kristen at this difficult time.”
