Dates set for Covid-19 postponed games

The Management Board have announced the dates on which matches postponed due to Covid-19 will now be played.

And they have vowed to continue to reorganise games until they reach the point when it becomes impossible to do so.

The Management Board will review the position again at the end of the month and have taken measures to assist the process.

The final of the Gordon Rigg Jack Hampshire Cup is to be put back from August 15 to September 12 and the season is to be extended to the weekend of September 18-19.

So far 30 league matches have been called off due to Covid-19 along with ties in the Jack Hampshire Cup, Priestley Shield, T20 Group A Cup and T20 Group B Cup.

The dates for the rearrangements are non-negotiable and are aimed at deciding every competition on the field of play.

Matches will only be rearranged once. If weather forces an abandonment to the rearranged game the result will stand, just as it would do on a Saturday.

There are three Second Teams Premier Division games yet to be allocated dates, New Farnley v Yeadon, Woodlands v Yeadon and East Bierley v Woodlands. This is due to New Farnley and Woodlands’ cup commitments.

In making the decision to continue to rearrange games the league warns that if the number of Covid-19 postponements remain at the level we have seen in the past two weeks it will quickly erode the capacity they currently have to fit games in.

The first objective is to get all clubs to 16 games. This is the point set out in the league rules at the start of the season at which two up and two down promotion and relegation operates.

If there are divisions where it is not possible to re-arrange every game, those matches will be declared void and finishing positions, will be determined by average points per game played. This is achieved by dividing a team’s total points won by their total number of games played.

This method is being used by the ECB for this season’s Vitality Blast and by Premier Leagues across the country who have not been playing postponed Covid-19 games again.

The benefit of this system is it based on what a team has achieved and does not involve awarding points that have not been earned.

By voiding the game both teams maintain their average and the only way that a team can improve its average is by playing.

Example
Team A Played 22 Points 330 PPG 15
Team B: Played 20 Points 320 PPG 16

Table
1 Team B 16
2 Team A 15

The Management Board have considered other methods of operating average points, but all of them involved awarding points that had not been earned.

While the league has been tackling the Covid-19 problem, it has been disappointing for the Management Board to see emails from club officials and players alleging that rivals are disguising a shortage of players by seeking a Covid-19 postponement.

The league has a robust system when dealing with clubs affected by Covid-19. In all cases, evidence has to be provided and is scrutinised before a match is allowed to be postponed. We have not had any club fail to do this and many hours are spent working with the clubs whenever a problem emerges.

In recent weeks we have seen players hospitalised by Covid-19 and others testing positive who have had both injections. Do not be fooled, Covid-19 is a serious and potentially lethal threat.

Matches are called off to guarantee the safety of the participants. Our league has taken a strong stance on this and if it was ever discovered that a club was trying to obtain a postponement without the required evidence it is prepared to invoke League Rule 47 for bringing the league into disrepute and among the penalties are a 200-point deduction and relegation.

In the event of any team forfeiting a game their opponents will receive the full 20 points and they will get zero.

The league has worked hard to get to the position we are at today, but we know there are further big challenges ahead. This is a time when we need everybody to forget petty rivalries and work to achieve the best possible outcome for the Gordon Rigg Bradford Premier League.
