Bowling Old Lane’s ‘Golden Oldies’ are celebrating after winning the Grey Fox Trophy at Scarborough on Sunday.
They defeated Wetherby Wrinklies by six wickets in the final after chasing down their opponents’ score of 177-5 with 19 balls to spare in the 30 overs per side contest.
Three of their batsmen, Iqbal Khan, Shahid Bashir and Nadeem Hanif retired after scoring 30 in the successful run chase.
The Old Lane bowlers did a good job in checking Wetherby’s progress in the latter stages of their innings.
The Wrinklies looked to be heading for a score of 200 when they reached 124-3 after 20 overs, but Old Lane stuck to their task well in the closing overs.
The Grey Fox Trophy is a county wide competition for the over-50s. Seventeen teams entered and were placed in four groups.
The group winners then progressed to the semi-finals where Old Lane defeated Beverley Vets by nine wickets at New Rover.
Spinners Ishtiaq Raza (2-19) and Iqbal Khan (2- 26) impressed for Old Lane as Beverley made 171-8 when they batted first/
Zubair Najib, Khalid Rehman, Iqbal Khan and Shahid Bashir. All retired after making 30 as Old Lane triumphed with just one wicket down.
