Having read some great posts from some of the first team lads on their best teams I thought having played in the league for such a long time in the 2nd XI this should get some publicity.
I have devised the team who I think is the best I have played against over the past 20 years. These lads have been a credit to their clubs and have been great competitors
NICK DARFIELD'S XI
1. Cieran Garner (Woodlands)
Since the age of 16 you could tell there was something good about this lad. Oozed class and over the past few seasons performed on such a consistent basis. Captained Woodlands to success and rarely failed. Never threw his wicket away. Should have played more first team and now doing the business as captain of his club. Well deserved .
2. James Milligan (Pudsey St Lawrence)
Another lad who loved to score runs. As I bowler you could not get into his ear. Great player and again consistent. Never played a loose shot. Loved a word or two.
3. Mick Baldwin (Gomersal)
The toughest bloke I have ever come across on a cricket field. Class batter and was a key to Gomersal’s success when they joined the league . He hurt you if you were not on your A-Game. Smashed it early doors.
4. Howard Ellis (Hanging Heaton)
Could have opened up with him but needed a stumper. Good all round player, old school Hanging Heaton tough as they come. Scored runs for fun. Not shy of a word either .
5. Richard Winn (Morley)
A key part of Morley’s success when they joined the league. Tough nut with the bat and bowled wicket to wicket with the ball. A great lad and good player, great in the slips as well.
6. Matthew Anderson (East Bierley) (capt)
Won everything with East Bierley. Gave you nothing when he bowled his non turning spin ,great fielder and destructive with the bat. Seen him go berserk far too many times.
7. Rob Metcalf (Woodlands)
Mr consistent and Mr woodlands. Great all rounder quicker than he looks and smashes a big ball. Another one of the Woodlands legends and a key part of my team.
8. Chris Brook (East Bierley)
He was rapid and he knew it. The fastest spell I have seen was at Spen Victoria in 2005 in the Shield Final. I felt sick after those first few overs. Another lad who should have played more first team. Not shy of a beamer. Unorthodox with the bat.
9. Umar Rehman (Hanging Heaton)
This lad turned it miles, unplayable when it was a dust bowl. You could hear it fizz when he bowled. Shame he doesn’t play any more.
10. Jamie Abbott (Baildon)
Mr Baildon is a great consistent bowler who never seems to bowl a bad ball. If you didn’t move your feet you were toast. His record is brilliant and will be the leading wicket taker in secondnd team cricket unless Pete Byrne has more comebacks than Frank Sinatra.
11. Pete Byrne (Hanging Heaton)
This bloke would die for his club. He is an umpires' nightmare but a great bowler and great bloke. A pleasure to know and play against .
Players very close were James Byrne, Warren Allitt, James Higgins, Michael Horner, and Steve Simpson . All top performers for their clubs.
